Sketchbook Practice & Unlocking the Secrets of Color with Jane Davies

Closed grid ( I love this guy )

Open grid ( love this guys too )

The next three are reassembling the grid.  I found this very addictive.  The last one is a way knock off of Jane's.  Sometimes I just needed a little jumping off point and I got it here.

So now we enter the world of UNLOCKING THE SECRETS OF COLOR.  I am one week into this class and feel like I have just found the jewell of art "PAINT."  Of my gosh I can't believe what I have been able to do with 5-6 bottles of paint and we haven't even gotten to white and black yet.  I just love this class and feel like I have finally got a better grip as to why things look the way they do.  When I did the wheel I thought okay the wheel, hold on Johnnie, I was in for a real surprise.  I am happy where i am right now.  IN THE PAINT ;-) In this piece I understand  that I have 2 areas with low contrast but its okay I understand!! How cool it that???

  2. I love that you are happy in the paint! Yeah!!

I really like the colors in the first grids. Very bold with all that black we love so much. The next ones where you added the scribbles are getting somewhere...I wonder what would happen if you added another layer of tissue paper and some opaques...just that extra layer.
The cobalt turquiose/black are the standouts of the group Char! The first one is pefection! Even the scribbles belong exactly where they are, exactly as they are. Wow!! Are the next 2 cut ups of the first one? I love that idea of playing.
The next 2 have great color combinations. For some reason I want to scrub in some more black on them...but maybe that's just because I love that messy/scrubbed look.
Those first grids for class can be difficult..more thant you'd expect but you've done great with them!
Your work has really grown Char! Isn't it unreal? Just a little more effort and allowing of freedom to make mistakes and look where we go!! Great work! I can't wait to see more.

  3. My gosh Carissa I just love it when I get feedback from you and BJ, because I so admire the work that you guys do. The last two pieces are one in the same. I just added some scribbles after I reassembled. Didn't do to well with the painted background on that one but its, just okay. The turquoise/black piece is really interesting to me because I thought that it was very monochromatic and I almost didn't post it for that reason. The response from Jane was that I got a lot of variety of values and intensity with a narrow range of color. Very moody she called it. But with this color class I am certain that, that will become even more clear to me. Yes I am excited beyond belief at how much I am learning and am so looking forward to other classes where I can grow and learn more about this wonderful world. Talk to you soon.
